Up for sale is a large and impressive original oil painting by the talented artist Robert Overman Hodgell. This large oil painting is executed on masonite and depicts a lion at the zoo with onlookers to the left with their faces pushed up against the metal bars. A face is seen by its self top right which apparently was a self portrait of the artist. The work is extremely well painted showing wonderful brushwork and texture and is signed "Hodgell" low right. The lion takes up the majority of the composition which I find quite appropriate and aesthetically attractive as he is clearly the main subject and meant to appear so large that he was not able to capture the entire creature within the painting. Worked on masonite measuring 30 x 48 inches the original frame measures 31 x 49 inches and is in overall excellent condition.
