Joseph W. Jicha was born in Austria-Hungary in 1901 and later migrated to the United States where his parents had found work. Quickly realizing his talents Joseph became quit the skilled watercolorist and is known well known for depictions of Mexico, West Coast and as this shows, the Islands. This work is executed on artist board in watercolor and is signed / titled lower left "Bermuda". Depicting a street scene with two figures front and center the taller man is holding a hoop and stick with child in hand and dog by their side. A beautiful garden with overflowing red and green in the courtyard just off the house and adds a nice warm contrast to the mainly cool composition. The condition of this watercolor does show toning and matt burn from its original frame which didn't have conservation quality materials. Other than that and some mild foxing this is really a fine work where you can even see Jicha's pencil underlines visible in the lighter white / cream tones. Jicha was known for having excellent lines and color which this work shows and they are becoming very scarce. His works reside in the San Diego Museum and Mexico National Museum.
