Up for sale is an absolutely breathtaking North Wales mountain landscape by the celebrated 19th century English painter Alfred Augustus Glendening Sr. (1840-1910). This example shows two figures in the foreground along the riverbank with their small cottage behind as it puffs smoke into the air. The calm river leads towards open pastures dotted with hay stacks all of which is set against a tremendous mountain landscape. Signed low left "A.A.G." the painting is dated 1874 and is a large example worked in oil on canvas measuring 24 x 36 inches while its vintage wood frame measures 30 x 42 inches.

Provenance verso indicates two titles. The first is "A Hilly Stream" while the second partially reads "ndel Castle from the River". Possibly Arundel Castle even through the landscape is rather romanticized. Paper labels indicate this work was sold by Reed and Frost of London and then later Findlay Galleries, Chicago.

Painted with exceptional detail, color and overall composition this is one of the finest paintings I have seen by the notable Englishman. The condition of this oil painting is restored and has been cleaned and mounted to board. Painting shows craquelure and frame may show light wear / blemishes. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine Alfred Augustus Glendening Sr. North Wales landscape but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
