Up for sale is an exceptional oil painting by the historic Knoxville, Tennessee painter Enoch Lloyd Branson depicting a Tennessee landscape. This early morning scene shows soft delicate pink tones in the sky stretching overhead casting a shadowy blanket over the foreground while the distant hillside sits lit by the suns early light. Six ducks, or geese, walk down the dirt road, lined with tracks, leading towards a blue roofed house seen in the near distance visible between the white flowering trees.

Executed in oil on wood panel this painting measures 17 x 23 inches while its original heavy gold gesso wood frame measures 29 x 35 inches. Signed low right, the signature is partially faded but reads “Lloyd Branson 1900”. This idyllic landscape is accompanied with wonderful provenance revealed by pencil inscriptions verso. The partial paper label indicates the artist being part of a group of painters called the “N.Y. Oil Guild” and the original price of $75 which was quite substantial in 1900. Additional writing on the back of the wood panel reads “Chas. C. Clark - Feb 10, 1900 - McCrary & Branson - Knox. Tenn.”. While Charles Clark is unknown (possibly the original buyer), the date is excellent and even better knowing this work was retailed through Branson’s own gallery in Knoxville which he co-owned with photographer Franklin Bell McCrary for roughly 30 years.

This landscape is easily one of the finest examples by Lloyd Branson when considering its medium, size, composition and provenance. Painted with extremely fine brushwork and delicate tones, this impressionist painting is charming and peaceful making you want to walk right into this turn of the century Tennessee landscape. The condition is fine showing possible light imperfections / surface abrasions and its original frame showing light wear as well. This work came from a fine old collection and I believe this is the first time the painting has been offered for sale. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this tremendous landscape painting by Enoch Lloyd Branson but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
