Up for sale is a rare and exquisite example of Junichiro Sekino’s woodblock print entitled “Roof Top Sea Scape”. From the edition of only 138, this example is numbered “61” as seen low left and is signed in pencil low right “Juni Sekino”. Dated 1977 this extremely large woodblock measures 21 3/4 x 29 1/2 inches with its full margins while the print measures 18 1/4 x 25 1/2 inches. Depicting a ferocious ocean of tossing waves in the distance, the foreground is composed of still, neatly patterned roofs almost keeping the contrasting sea at bay. In the distance towers and larger buildings are seen over the seaside cliff all of which help create not only an aesthetically pleasing print but one of extreme uniqueness when it comes to this period of Japanese prints. The condition is very good overall with minimal discoloration to the sheet and minor matt burn. Minor handling wear to sheet with small creases and or waviness. The colors have retained extraordinarily well with its soft arrays of blues and earth tones. Within the low left sheet the artist’s name is seen watermarked into the paper which is characteristic of his fine prints. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this rare Sekino woodblock but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
