Up for sale is an exceptional painting by the 19th century painter H.V.S. Seymour depicting a wonderful New Hartford, Vermont, river valley landscape at sunset. Titled verso “New Hartford, Vermont US - Sketched & Painted from Nature by H.V.S. Seymour - Buffalo, NY 1880”, this work is executed in oil on board measuring 22.75 x 26.5 inches while its new gold wood frame measures 25.75 x 29.5 inches. Signed low right, this painting depicts a most wonderfully beautiful and romantic American landscape with cows wading in shallow waters in the foreground looking up the now Farmington River towards a distant town with mountains in the distance. This river valley landscape is naturally framed by tall trees helping lead the eyes up the river towards a sky showing a lovely orange luminance partially cutting through the thick trees above. I find charming the young couple walking down the forest path to the right and the two arch stone bridges seen stretching across the water, one at the village at the works center, the other in the very far distance. This painting by Seymour is easily the finest example I have been able to locate from the artist from its highly attractive composition, color palette, subject matter and overall detail, this painting has it all! The condition of the painting while lovely shows an outward bow, craquelure and a couple tiny dots of loss. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this tremendous 19th century romantic American river valley landscape by H.V.S. Seymour but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
