Up for sale is my collection of Santa Fe, New Mexico Christmas cards from the early California impressionist painter Lucy Bacon's personal collection. Containing 33 primarily woodblock prints these charming personal notes capture a fantastic part of history of great friendship that existed within the New Mexico / California family of artists including Olive Rush, Gustave Baumann, Will Shuster, Josef Imhof, John Sloan, Williard Clark, Dorothy Newkirk Stewart and more. Lucy was particularly close to Olive exchanging may works between them, one original watercolor that Olive gave to Lucy on her first Christmas spent in New Mexico in 1917 that I currently have available. In addition to having a close relationship with Olive, she was also close to Dorothy Newkirk Stewart of which 17 of these woodblocks were made by. The Albuquerque Museum holds her prints in their collection. All these rare original greeting cards are being sold separately and can be found available in my store, check them out or feel free to send me a message. These were just all removed from Lucy's old original portfolio and have not been seen in decades making this an exciting opportunity for any collector.
Up for sale is a fine Dorothy Newkirk Stewart woodblock print given as a Christmas card depicting the early 19th century New Mexico "Santuario Chimayo". Measuring folded 7 x 10 inches the condition shows some discoloration, foxing and slight corner/edge imperfections. This is a stand out example from Lucy's collection as it so wonderfully portrays the Church in its unique orange color. Not only is the color good but so the size and the personal inscription seen on the inside. Dorothy inscribed in the card "A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Miss Rush and Miss Bacon from Dorothy Stewart". This so sweetly was written and printed for two of her very close friends Lucy Bacon and Olive Rush. Three 1926 stamps that were used to send this letter in the mail are still attached. This is one of the largest examples found in Lucy's portfolio and an absolute phenomenal print by the excellent New Mexico female print maker.
The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine little Santa Fe, New Mexico Christmas card but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
