Anna Lea Merritt was born 1844 in Philadelphia where she was classically trained in painting portraits, landscapes and religious scenes. She lived and worked in England the majority of her life until she married Henry Merritt. Anna's plan was to stop painting when she got married but her husband tragically died just three months after their marriage. She started to pant again as a source of income and she painted her most famous painting "Love Locked Out" which was inspired by Henry's death.

This is a beautiful little portrait etching clearly showing her portrait expertise which she's remembered for. This was originally bound in a book and has three spots where staples had held it into the binding. The book was American Art Collections written by William Montgomery in 1889 and included is its cover page. This etching comes unframed and may have slight imperfections around the border on the margins due to it being unframed.
